Biography

Ousama, known artistically as AKSIL, is an Algerian-American artist born in 1981 in the Aures region of Algeria. Deeply rooted in his Berber heritage, AKSIL draws profound inspiration from his cultural background, which continues to shape the themes and spirit of his artistic work.

His early exposure to local artists and students from the Fine Arts School of Batna played a crucial role in the formation of his artistic philosophy and style. Influenced by the masters of the European Renaissance—such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Peter Paul Rubens—AKSIL devoted time to reproducing their masterpieces, gaining a deeper understanding of classical techniques and artistic expression.

Between 1996 and 2001, AKSIL lived through the Algerian Civil War, a period that left an indelible mark on his creative journey. In an era when art was considered taboo and often prohibited by extremist groups, his commitment to artistic expression became an act of personal and cultural resilience.

In 2001, AKSIL took a bold step by traveling to Algiers to apply to the Superior School of Fine Arts. He was accepted into the program, specializing in oil painting under the mentorship of the distinguished artist Kerim Sergoua, who had a significant impact on his artistic development. During his time at the Mahieddine Campus, he experimented with new forms and expressive techniques, pushing the boundaries of his creativity.

AKSIL finds deep kinship with the words of Vincent van Gogh, particularly the letters written to his brother Theo, which he regards as timeless messages to all artists. He often feels as though Van Gogh is speaking directly to him, reinforcing his emotional connection to the artistic journey.

Known for his resourcefulness and innovative spirit, AKSIL embraces every opportunity to create—even in environments where artistic expression faces limitations. His work is defined by a strong spiritual foundation and a multidimensional approach that blends cultural identity, introspection, and experimentation.

Now based in the United States, AKSIL continues to cultivate his distinctive artistic voice. He is a member of the International Association of Art (IAA/USA), through which he engages with the global art community while remaining deeply connected to his roots.
